Website Optimization Can Yield Big Returns
For most small and mid-sized businesses, website-optimization services can deliver an excellent return on investment. If you haven’t optimized your site to rank well on search engines, which is called “on-site optimization,” it is time to do so. But acquiring organic (unpaid) rankings isn’t easy. After all, every business wants its website to be number one.
Here are some high-value website optimization suggestions from our SEO team.
The Importance of Keywords
The search engine optimization process begins with keyword selection. Which words are your prospective customers using when they search for a business that sells your products or services?
Keyword research identifies commonly-used search words and their relative competitiveness.
After identifying and prioritizing targets, optimize each page for just one or two primary keyword phrases. Tailoring content with a narrow focus, or long-tail keyword, usually yields better rankings than creating content that targets a broader subject.
Effective Title Tags
Once you’ve selected your keywords, weave them into your copy. Also use them to craft your title tag, which is part of the metadata that tells Google about your page’s subject matter and appears in search results.
Keyword Prominence Trumps Keyword Density
For several years, keyword density — a ratio determined by the number of times your keyword appeared on a page divided by the total word count — was priority one. That practice often resulted in pages stuffed with repetitive keywords.
Currently, keyword density is less critical than keyword prominence, which is the position keywords appear within the copy. Include your keyword in the first 100 words of your page. Additionally, use your keyword in your headline and at least one subhead. That tells Google, as well as your visitor, what your page has to offer.
Track your results so that if Google reduces the value of keyword prominence and instead gives more weight to another variable, you can make adjustments. Monitoring and agility are critical to SEO success.
LSI Keywords
Using Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) keywords in your copy gives Google further clues and confirmation about the subject matter of your page. LSI keywords are synonyms or terms related to your primary keywords. Often they’re paired.
If your page is about baseball, for example, some LSI words might be baseball games, baseball scores, and baseball rules. Identify the best LSI keywords to use and then creatively weave them into your copy.
Making the Most of Alt Tags and Captions
Google sees words, not pictures. But you can use alt tags to help Google identify the content of images. A few words will usually do the trick. When possible, include your keywords in those alt tags.
Depending on your page layout, consider adding captions to your pictures. These brief descriptions offer yet another opportunity to incorporate your keywords.
Pages Must Load Quickly
Pages must load quickly to avoid losing visitors. Page-load speed also affects your search rankings.
Evaluate and improve the loading speed of your pages. Address any technical issues that hinder performance and could harm your Google ranking.
Social Sharing Helps Promote Your Content
Social sharing buttons, such as those for Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and LinkedIn, make it easy for visitors to share your page to their network of friends and associates. Place buttons in a prominent place on your website.
Long Copy vs. Short Copy
The debate continues over copy length, whether short copy or long is more effective in communicating its message. However, Google leaves no doubt about its preference. For competitive keywords, long text ranks higher.
Don’t add unnecessary words or irrelevant details to your copy. Instead, fill each page with well-organized, useful information.
Monitor Visitor Engagement
Bounce rate is an effective way to measure visitor engagement. It is the ratio of visitors who “bounce” away from your site without visiting another page, divided by total visitors.
If people click on the link to your site and then quickly leave, Google notices. A high bounce rate tells the search engines that your website is not delivering on the goods. Visitors arrive there and don’t find what they want, so they leave.
Strive to increase the dwell time visitors spend on your site by creating high-quality, focused content. Make sure the headline and first paragraph are engaging. Finally, include internal links close to the top of a page where visitors can immediately see what else is available. That way, they may choose to explore the site further rather than hitting their back button.
Increase Your CTR
If searchers rarely click on your site in search results, Google will think you’re not a good match for the keyword searched, and your rankings may falter. The opposite will happen if your site appears to be a click magnet.
One of the best ways to increase your click-through rate (CTR) is to write compelling meta descriptions. That’s the brief text snippet Google will display in its results. Consider hiring an SEO copywriter to craft quality meta descriptions that score high CTRs.
Google’s Rules Keep Changing, Secretively
Google doesn’t publish its search algorithm, the mix of 200-plus factors it weighs to determine where your site will appear for relevant search queries. And to make matters even more challenging, Google changes its algorithm often. Staying abreast of their ever-evolving secret sauce requires research and diligent monitoring.
And unfortunately, mistakes can have severe consequences. If you do something Google has recently decided is verboten, they may exile your website to Internet Siberia.
